Model 214 was originally introduced in 1959 for factory workers. It was inspired by the success of the 101, the mailman's uniform oxford, which was constructed using a neoprene outsole, a leather foot bed and a corked filled midsole.

Sturdy, thick, high-quality leather is essential for making Red Wing work boots. Since Mr. Beckman founded the company in 1905, premium leathers would be a key requirement for the footwear.
The name "Moccasin" originally comes from Algonquian word meaning "shoe." They were originally made by sewing together two pieces of leather (usually deerskin), one for the bottom one for the upper. The enduring U-shaped cutout leather upper have become known as moccasin-sewn shoes. Red Wing has made shoes with moccasin-toe design since its earliest days, and they continue to be a best-seller.
